Advent Candles

At the Vigil and Sunday Masses during the day this week, we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. We light a pink candle in the Advent Wreath. Each candle has a symbolic meaning. There are several different versions of the what the candles symbolize, but most sources state hope, peace, joy and love. The lighting sequence for the five weeks are purple, purple, pink, purple and white (the center candle for Christmas.)

The vestments worn by the clergy at each of the masses follow the same liturgical colors. Purple or violet is a color of preparation and is worn during Advent in preparation of Christmas and during Lent in preparation of Easter.

In the Catholic Church, the lighting of candles for various reasons is commonplace. Candles are lit at each mass and votive candles are often lit at side stations or altars for special prayers. One of my favorite stories about candles is by Hall of Fame Baseball Manager Tommy Lasorda. He told the story during his Hall of Fame induction speech. Enjoy!
